Our actions against Covid 19
Established in the 1980s, Viluco is Grupo Lucci’s agricultural company, working towards adding value to the primary production of Argentine fields. Our activities are carried out in north-western Argentina, out of a total of 29,000 owned hectares, distributed in 12 estates located in the provinces of Santiago del Estero, Salta and Tucumán, where we produce soybeans and corn as main crops, and wheat, sorghum, cotton, chickpeas and black beans in smaller areas.
We produce different types of annual crops based on our agro-ecological area, achieving better production efficiency.
The company exploits a total of 29,000 planted hectares distributed in 12 estates from north-western Argentina located in the provinces of Tucumán, Catamarca, Salta and Santiago del Estero.
This is the moment when the water and the nutrients necessary for the next crop are stored. Additionally, we conduct weed control tasks by using cutting-edge technology, such as selective herb control, reducing the indiscriminate use of herbicides and therefore minimising their costs by 43%.
It is the moment of greatest attention and expectation during the season. The seeds are placed in the soil under optimal conditions for their germination and sprouting in order to develop the new seedlings.
Our products are harvested with the latest technology available in the market, which results in a significant reduction of losses and a quality improvement of the harvested crop.
We work with the system of direct sowing, with contributions of dry matter through service crops, such as rye, vetch and forage radish, and a high share of grasses in the crop rotation (almost 50%), achieving greater stability of yields and mitigating the impact of the climate crisis. These crops are sown to protect the soil against water erosion, reduce its compaction and improve its fertility, enhance nitrogen fixation and control weeds and pests, while increasing the biodiversity of production systems.
Given their resistance and recurrence, using weed control during fallow poses the challenge of being productive and sustainable at the same time. In this regard, we have adopted the Targeted Spray System, which allows a variable, specific and reduced dosing directly on the plants. The system helps us reduce water consumption and product drift, and is capable of saving 40-70% agrochemicals in each use, minimising the environmental impact and production costs.
Soybean production is internationally certified under regulation RTRS (Round Table Responsible Soybean). Viluco was the first company in Argentina to meet that standard. In 2012, we launched a project called “Sustainable soybean for producers from north-western Argentina” by which, together with the Soy Fast Track Dutch Funds, we promoted and financed the certification process in the standard for small and medium-scale soy producers linked to our value chain.
Started in 2003, the Foundation aims at strengthening the rural communities of the Argentinian Northwest, by answering some of the innumerable social and educational needs of the region. Through our own training programmes, which are related to subjects such as Values, Health, the Environment, Human Rights, Child Labour, Entrepreneurship and Labour Market Integration, we seek to strengthen the comprehensive development of children, youngsters, adults and their communities.
